Each Fairmont property recognizes three employees monthly to present employee service awards in cities like Toronto. The winners each month are honoured at a formal reception where the GM and Director of Human Resources present the awards. These employees or “Stars of the Month” as they are called, receive a package that includes a thank you letter from the GM, an inscribed plaque, a “Service Plus” pin, a watch and a gift. Amanda O’Brien, a former HR manager for the Vancouver Fairmont Hotel says that “The Star program is so comprehensive; people feel really special because of all the attention they get. It’s great to hear all the enthusiasm in our committee’s selection meeting. It’s fun and even a bit competitive to sell your nominee to the rest of the group” (www.go2hr.ca). The program is very popular because the monthly winners are in the running to be selected as the hotel’s Star of the Year.
